This spring, the Chelsea Groton Foundation awarded $202,950 to 73 non-profit organizations from Connecticut and Rhode Island. Inclusive of these donations, the Foundation has proudly provided over $5.7 million in total grants to the community since 1998.
Almost half (43%) of funds went to organizations in the health and human services category. Educational projects accounted for 22% of giving, arts and culture organizations received 18% of funding, housing-specific causes received 4%, and economic Grants support programs that benefit children and families in Eastern CT
The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT Foundation recently awarded numerous grants to support 35 programs that address education, economic development, food insecurity, and essential needs in the region.
The mission of the Foundation, a 501(c)3 overseen by a volunteer board with support from the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT, is to enhance and enrich education and economic opportunities, especially for children and families, in Higher Edge is pleased to announce that Sara Bailey, John Bairos, and Tashawn Ward have joined its board of directors.
“Sara has had a longstanding interest in our work, John has served as a volunteer, and Tashawn is a Higher Edge alumnus,” said Theresa Armendarez, Higher Edge Executive Director. “Their professional backgrounds and commitment to improving access to higher education for low-income and first-generation college bound students will be an asset to the board,” added Kristi Kelly, President, Grants support programs that benefit children and families in Eastern CT
The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT Foundation awarded grants in excess of $94,000 in support of 37 programs that benefit children and families in the region on March 24, 2020.
“At this critical time for many nonprofits, the Foundation worked to swiftly disburse funds to the recipients,” said Tony Sheridan, President and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT. “The Board members did a wonderful job of making ready the The Community Foundation’s 2019 Scholarship Committees selected a total of 283 students from among its 42 communities across Eastern Connecticut to receive $725,489 in scholarships.
The Community Foundation recognizes the importance of creating access for lower income and first-generation students, as well as supporting students throughout their academic journey with multi-year awards whenever possible. As an integral part of this strategy, the Community Foundation provides grants to support Higher Higher Edge is pleased to announce the hiring of Graciela Guzman as Success Program Advisor, and Jason Pellum as College Access Program Advisor. Jason will advise Windham area high school seniors to help them navigate the college application process. Graciela will advise and mentor Higher Edge students enrolled in college; with a focus on academic, financial, and career guidance.“Jason and Graciela have prior experience working with students and an educational focus on guidance counseling. Their skills will Luisanna Cabrera of Waterford, CT, recently joined Chelsea Groton Bank as a Mortgage Specialist. In this position, Luisanna will work with customers throughout New London County, Connecticut and Rhode Island who are in need of a variety of lending solutions, from traditional mortgages, to first-time homebuyer and affordable lending programs, to specialty financing and home equity loans. She iscertified by the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System & Registry (NMLS #1866854), and is fluent in both English and Pfizer’s Groton Laboratories and the Clinical Research Unit, New Haven will support more than 60 programs in Southeastern Connecticut, the greater New Haven area, and southern Rhode Island through its 2019 competitive grants program.

This year’s disbursement reflects the highest-ever amount distributed by the Foundation and marks a twelve percent increase over the 2018 grant disbursement.
The Foundation raised funds throughout 2018 with fundraisers including the 7th Annual Bowl-a-Thon at High Rollers Luxury Lanes at Foxwoods New London, CT – Higher Edge is a nonprofit that guides low-income and first-generation students through enrollment, retention, and graduation from college by providing the support and resources needed for success. Students admitted into its College Access Program begin working with Higher Edge staff their senior year of high school to apply to college. Once enrolled, students transition to the organization’s Success Program. Higher Edge is currently seeking Summer 2019 paid internships for its Success New London, CT – Higher Edge’s 3rd Annual “Dancing for Degrees” fundraiser on November 3rd from 6-10p at Connecticut College’s Crozier-Williams Student Center, 1962 Room, will feature performances by two area professional dancers; Brandon Couloute and Nelson Chalas.
Brandon “Lectronic” Couloute has been teaching Hip-Hop & break dancing to students and adults in Connecticut for eight years. His passion for old school Hip Hop culture has led him to not only train in its various forms but also to educate his New London, CT – Higher Edge is pleased to announce it has received a $75,000 grant from The Edward and Mary Lord Foundation to establish “The Higher Edge Scholarship Fund.” The endowment fund will be invested and managed by the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut and will provide financial assistance to Higher Edge students attending qualified educational institutions.
“We are grateful to The Lord Foundation for having the vision to invest in our students’ bright futures,” said Theresa Armendarez, United Way of Southeastern Connecticut’s Board of Directors has approved funding in the amount of $2,201,636 for the fiscal year 2018-19. This funding supports 49 programs at 25 nonprofit agencies in New London County that work together to provide a vital network of services to help those in need.

As part of United Way's partnership with the selected programs, funding will be provided for one year to pursue and accomplish the goals indentified by United Way.
